Male Breast Reduction
Gynaecomastia , or the development of male breasts sometimes referred to as ‘man boobs’, is experienced by many men and can be a result of a number of factors including:
- excess fatty tissue as in obesity
- the loss of such excess fatty tissue from massive weight loss giving a loose skin, sagging empty breast look.
- abnormal overgrowth of the breast disk giving an enlarged male breast in an otherwise normal weight individual due to hormonal imbalance or irregularities, drug intake e.g. anabolic steroids or in many cases the cause is unknown and may be genetic.
This can lead to a low self-esteem in sufferers and can cause a heightened sense of self consciousness.
Gynaecomastia Correction surgery is permanent but if the formation of the male breasts was due to certain prescription medications or drugs then it is important to remain free of these substances. It is also important to maintain a stable weight in order to avoid a re-occurrence of male breasts.
Am I a Suitable Candidate for Gynaecomastia Correction?
Whether or not you are a suitable candidate for male breast reduction surgery is for our surgeon Mr Rahdon and you to discuss. We undertake a complete analysis of your medical history as well as a thorough clinical consultation. You typically need to be in a healthy weight range and in good health to be considered for surgery.
Gynaecomastia Correction Surgery
Surgical treatment will depend on the cause. For example, in the case of soft and fatty excess breast tissue, and especially when there is not a large amount of excess skin, liposuction is usually used and can be very effective. This results in only very small scars in the lower part of the breast fold area. However, if liposuction cannot be used as the excess breast tissue is too firm, the excess breast tissue is removed via a cut that is made around the lower edge of the nipple. In either procedure, the scars are usually well hidden.
The operation generally takes 2 hours and requires an overnight stay in hospital. All surgical procedures are performed under general anesthesia.
The operation is typically not very painful and you will be given strong painkillers during your stay in hospital to minimise any discomfort. We will also give you tablets to take home with you to keep you comfortable.
What is the Recovery Time following Surgery?
After male breast surgery, dressings and bandages are applied to the area to help minimise swelling in the area and to support the new chest contours. It is usually the case that after male breast reduction surgery, patients will heal within ten to twelve days and that you can return to work in 2 weeks for light duties. You should be able to return to full activities including sport by 6 weeks following the surgery.
What are the Potential Risks and Complications?
Complications are uncommon but can include bleeding, infection and fluid accumulation. During your initial consultation Mr Rahdon will cover with you in detail the risks and complications associated with the surgery. This consultation will include an examination, usually a blood test will be organised and a special X-ray (ultrasound) may also be arranged. Should you choose to proceed with surgery, we will again explain any risks as part of the consenting process.
We ensure that risks are kept to a complete minimum with the help of selecting suitable patients as well as the selection of the appropriate procedure for your specific requirements. You should also understand that our highly qualified and experienced surgeon, Mr Rahdon, will not perform any cosmetic procedure unless he believes that the benefits significantly outweigh the risks for you.
