Wrinkle Treatments
Anti-wrinkle injections are an effective non-surgical alternative for the treatment and prevention of selected wrinkles. They are used to relax the muscles which allow wrinkles to disappear or prevent wrinkles from forming. The most common area that anti-wrinkle injections are used are in the brow, between the eyebrows for “frown lines” and around the eyes for “crows feet”. Anti-wrinkle injections are also used to control hyperactive sweat glands, hyperhydrosis, headaches and blepharospasm or twitching of the eyes.
Anti-wrinkle injections are a highly purified preparation of a nerve paralysing toxin produced by the Botulin bacterium. Its application to treat facial lines has developed from initial use in eyelid disorders. Treatment is performed using a fine needle. A small amount is injected into the desired area. The sensation is likened to an insect bite and no local anaesthetic is required. Several injections are needed for each treatment and it works by relaxing the muscles that are causing frown lines and wrinkles. Our surgeon Richard Rahdon can identify the muscles that are causing the wrinkles, and these can be selectively relaxed so that your normal function is not affected.
After treatment the overlying skin remains smoother and less wrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract normally. Treatment does not produce numbness or disturbance of sensation, however, minor short lived bruising and swelling may be experienced at the injection site. The treatment does not take long and the recovery is only a few minutes. You can resume normal activities immediately.
The effect generally lasts for 3-4 months, after which the treatment can be repeated again. The results are usually evident about 2-3 days after treatment with the peak effect being reached after 7 days.
Other treatments can be used concurrently, such as dermal fillers to optimise the result you are after.
